Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 1 Corinthians 14: 4-8
Living in the Middle East, I often think of this scripture, and the part that jumps out at me is, “love is patient.” Patience is hard for most of us, but as a family living in Israel, and for anyone who arrives for an extended stay, I would say that this is where we get tested most: day to day life, more lines, “take a number,” at the bank, at the pharmacy, everywhere. While doing this I think, “Am I suppose to feel the emotion of love while doing these things along with feeling impatient, anxious, irritated, and ready to move on to the next thing?” How do you feel love while you are feeling impatient, when Love is patience? Sometimes I try to practice this. I remind myself over and over Love is patient, love is patient, love is patient. I do the same thing while our daughter is trying to complete a book or our son constantly takes his diaper off and smears the remains everywhere. Love is patient!! As I think about renewing your mind, I realize that repeating this verse over and over in my head is exactly that.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
In meditating on this we can be reminded that love takes practice. Some are more gifted at this and gracious than others. Others of us need to meditate day and night and practice our ability to walk in love.
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1-8
